Inspiration for segment displays and LCDs

Notes on fluid crystal displays (LCDs) with segmented displays.

  • Contrast ratios lower the more distant the temp from standard operating temp. For example, a TN display with transmissive polarizer at 22C is 135-150:1, but at 80C it is 8.9-12:1.
  • At lower temperatures, the switching speed is slower.
  • Plate size is 14"x 16" (setting max dimensions)
  • Multiplexed means driving multiple segments with less pins, but temp range and contrast ratio are affected.
  • Static drive means each segment has its own pin.
  • TN (twisted nematic) displays actually are a Chiral + a Nematic liquid crystal mixed. TN twists 90 degrees, while STN (super twisted nematic) twists 180 - 270 degrees.

  • min distance between segments is .03mm, but .05mm is recommended
  • min distance to edge of glass is 1.3mm, but 1.5mm - 2.0mm is recommended
